Many members of Disciples churches may know little about the rich history of the denomination. Unfortunately, some may have few resources to draw upon for this teaching. You might be a new member of a Disciples church and would like an in-depth introduction. Or, you might be a life-long Disciple and still wish to know more about the history, polity and ethos of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.)
To fill this need, we have re-packaged the videos and materials that we normally use in our very popular clergy/seminarian course, “History, Polity and Ethos of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)” for use by ordinary people. Further, to make the course accessible to all, we have priced the course for only $39.95 per person.
This is a seminary-quality in-depth course! Despite its low price, this course contains high-quality academic scholarship from a highly-respected professor, Dr. Jerry Gladson, Ph.D.
Our hope is to make Disciples history available to the broadest possible audience. Self-paced, it is perfect for both individual and group studies. This is a non-credit course and grades will not be issued. Our objective is to make quality teaching relevant and accessible to the people of Disciples churches.
This online course is entirely self-paced and can be taken with only a web browser and a broadband Internet connection. The course is composed of eleven online lessons containing a total of 28 online videos; more than eight hours of video lectures. There are also optional readings and pre-programmed discussion points posed by Dr. Gladson for each lesson. Typically each lesson will take about 90 minutes to complete, including viewing the lesson's videos and doing the optional readings and posting responses to the optional discussions. The lessons are completely self-paced and are typically completed at the rate of one per week over 11-12 weeks. However, you control the pace and can go faster or slower.
This course explores the history and polity of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from its origins in the early 1800s to the present. Emphasis focuses on the pioneer founders of the denomination, Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone and Walter Scott; and their influence on the movement that emerged out of their efforts. The growth of the denomination will be viewed in the context of national and international history as it grew to take its place among the established, mainstream churches of modern times. Attention will also be given to the Restructure of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) that has shaped its modern identity, polity, ethos, and mission.
Registration is online and can be securely completed in just a couple of minutes with a credit or debit card. After registration, you will gain immediate access to this course. To register, please click here.
